george salmon (1819-1904) was born in dublin on the 25th of september 1819 and educated at trinity college in that city. having become senior moderator in mathematics and a fellow of trinity, he took holy orders, and was appointed regius professor of divinity in dublin university in 1866, a position which he retained until 1888, when he was chosen as provost of trinity college, a position he retained until his death on the 22nd of january 1904.
