preserved shop front of pearse & sons, stonemasons, dublin.
james pearse was an artisan and stonemason. he moved to Ireland from birmingham to take advantage of the boom in church building during the second half of the 19th century. his two sons patrick and william were executed by british forces in 1916 - patrick the leader of the easter rising, and william the willing participant, seemingly shot because of his notorious brother.
on the 50th anniversary of the rising, the street was renamed from great bruncwick street to pearse street, in honour of the leader of the rising.
