coal hole
an iron covering for a coal hole on baggot street lower, dublin.

coal holes are located outside every old georgian house in dublin and lead directly to the cellars of the houses. in the days of coal, delivery men would open the hole and deliver the coal to the house by dumping the required amount into the cellar.

the engraving reads as follows - "cast at south city foundry, 41 bishop st".
